From doing Meta to doing good

Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg recently joined a string of executives who have departed over the last year , announcing she was leaving to focus more on philanthropy .
While previous departing execs have all gone in different directions , many have sought out roles aimed at doing good .
In the biggest leadership departure for Meta prior to Sandberg ( September 2021 ), Mike Schroepfer stepped down from his CTO role to dedicate himself to his “ personal philanthropic efforts ” and his passion for climate tech investment – he is co-founder of non-profit Additional Ventures , which helps to ‘ shape a healthier , more equitable world ’. Just a few months prior , Meta ’ s head of VR Hugo Barra departed , saying he wanted to take his experiences in tech and apply them to healthcare . He subsequently joined Covid-19 testing startup Detect as CEO . And renowned product guru Kevin Weil departed Meta after six years as VP of Product to become President of Planet , a startup providing daily satellite data that helps businesses and governments take positive action . Perhaps , recent news reports showing how much Meta knows about the harms caused by its services and ongoing threats of antitrust actions have pushed said executives into following more fruitful paths .
Or perhaps , like many of us working in a post-pandemic world with new priorities , purpose is calling .
MENSTRUAL LEAVE Spain ’ s government has approved plans to allow women to take unlimited paid ‘ menstrual leave ’ from work , marking a European first . Menstrual leave is currently offered only in Japan , Taiwan , Indonesia , South Korea and Zambia .

ASIA TECH LAYOFFS Tech layoffs continue to spiral , with many Asia startups slashing jobs , with large cuts at JD . com ’ s Indonesia arm , Indian edtech Uday and Softbank-backed Singapore-headquartered ride-hailing unicorn Grab , which laid off 300 employees .
