London Gatwick Airport began its journey in 1930 as a small flying club known as the Surrey Aero Club . During World War II the airport became a base for the RAF and remained in that role until 1946 when it was decommissioned , becoming a civil airport for charter airlines and cargo flights . In the 1950s London Gatwick Airport became the second largest airport in London , and in 1987 became the second busiest airport in the world , overtaking JFK . In 2018 , the airport celebrated 60 years since it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II . JUNE 2020
