new chamber at the end of a run , the surface work , station construction and ventilation shafts form an equally large part of the scheme . For example , at the new Whitechapel station a shaft is being sunk at Durward Street will include staircases , escalators and lifts for passengers to use to and from the platforms in the new Crossrail station . Excavation of the shaft is complete and a two metre thick concrete base slab has been poured to form the foundation of the shaft . Work is now taking place to build the permanent structure of the shaft .
