LUNAR TOUCHDOWN
SPACE. THE FINAL FRONTIER. Despite our galaxy mapping efforts, even the understanding of our moon only goes so far. After the Artemis II mission flew by our cosmic neighbour earlier this year, it seems moon-hype is on the rise once again. MDA Space UK, a UK-based space tech firm, has been officially selected to supply its lunar landing sensor technology to the European Space Agency’ s Argonaut mission scheduled for 2030. With support from the UK Space Agency, MDA’ s LEIA( LiDAR for Extraterrestrial Imaging Applications) sensor will serve as a key piece to the Argonaut’ s Hazard Detection and Avoidance system. Additionally, it will allow the spacecraft to navigate rough terrain as it reaches the lunar surface. With British aerospace companies often overshadowed by American and Chinese counterparts, MDA Managing Director Andrew Stanniland says this achievement“ demonstrates the strength and innovation” of the UK space sector.
