INFINITE SPACE
Vast as it is, there’ s only so much room here on Earth. As global computer power and technology demand grow, many tech experts are looking to the next best place for space – and what’ s more optimal than space itself? Tech startup Starcloud aims to leverage the sizable room in the planet’ s orbit to solve the issues related to powering multi-gigawatt, resource-hungry data centres on Earth – as of right now, perhaps a more achievable goal than stationing them on the moon like some in the wider industry have suggested. Starcloud says orbital data centres will utilise high-intensity, 24 / 7 solar power systems, unaffected by day and night cycles, to power these machines, claiming they will ultimately save more on operational costs than their terrestrial counterparts. It sounds like, provided our sun holds fast, the data centre project won’ t be in need of a power source. However, if a maintenance issue arises, we might need to rethink how we go about requesting an electrician.
