THE BRIEFING | ITINERARY
LEISURE
WHEN YOU’ RE OFF THE CLOCK, the free trip up the Santa Barbara Courthouse clock tower can’ t be beaten. Time it for the hour or half-hour to hear the bells, take in the views, then wander the sunken gardens and soak up the architecture. Down at the water, walk Stearns Wharf and look back at the city. One of the best waterfront views isn’ t of the water at all, but of the mountains and red tiled roofs Santa Barbara is famous for.
For downtime, wander the murals and art of the Funk Zone, then grab a beverage at Lama Dog Tap Room, where I often go to work with my laptop most evenings, since the after-work crowd lands here too. And if you’ d rather have sand underfoot, head to Hendry’ s Beach. Grab an appetizer or a drink at the Boathouse bar, turn left if you love dogs, right if you’ re less enthused, or, if you’ d prefer less sand and more nature, the Douglas Family Preserve has a great view of the entire beach.
