HAS SPENT THE PAST DECADE watching other back-office functions get the digital glow up first. Finance got real-time dashboards, procurement got predictive analytics. The best HR got was a portal and a ticketing system. But that gap is closing fast. Seven in ten business leaders now rank speed and agility as their primary competitive strategy for the next three years- that’ s according to Deloitte’ s 2026 Global Human Capital Trends report, which surveyed more than 9,000 business and HR leaders across 89 countries. Workforce costs remain the largest controllable expense line for most large organisations, and they’ re also where speed and agility actually come from- which is why chief executives are pulling CHROs into decisions once reserved for the CFO. For HR departments, agentic AI on paper looks like an attractive way to become more nimble. Trouble is, it’ s coming at an uncomfortable pace.
The admin trap Most HR departments still spend the bulk of their time on transactional work: routing tickets, answering policy questions, chasing approvals through systems that don’ t talk to each other. More than eight in ten HR leaders claim they plan to implement agentic AI within their function this year, according to Gartner research. Intent and execution are very different things though.
