THE WAREHOUSE HOTEL is where I would send someone who wants to understand Singapore beyond the obvious skyline. It is a restored heritage building on Robertson Quay and it has the kind of character that makes a hotel stay feel connected to the city, rather than dropped into it. The rooms are dark, calm and well designed. The river is right there. The bar is also one of those places where you can have a proper conversation at the end of the day, which is sometimes exactly what you need after a schedule full of meetings. If you want something more expansive, CAPELLA SINGAPORE on Sentosa is extraordinary. It has that rare feeling of stillness, with restored colonial buildings, greenery and space around you. You are still close enough to the Central Business District for a business trip, but it’ s far enough away to let your brain switch into a different mode. ANDAZ SINGAPORE is the practical choice, and I mean that as a compliment. It is well located, the views are excellent, breakfast works and you can get across the city easily. When you are travelling for work, convenience is not a boring detail. It is often the difference between a good trip and an exhausting one. THE BARRACKS HOTEL is quieter and more discreet. It sits in restored former military buildings on Sentosa and feels more tucked away than some of the bigger luxury options. I like hotels that have not lost the story of the building they are in, and The Barracks has managed that well.
